You’ve seen celebrities and big influencers who are just like you and they have a huge fan following, get to try amazing brand name products all the time *For FREE* and all they do is post pictures about how much they are enjoying life.
Well, I am happy to tell you that you can do the same! You can become what is called a micro-influencer. What is that, you might ask?
Entrepreneur magazine explains it well: [https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/293824]
“They are tastemakers, opinion-shapers and trend-forecasters who generally have between 1,000 and 50,000 followers.”
In other words, a micro-influencer is someone who is knowledgeable about a certain market, has a sizeable following and can have an impact on peoples’ views about things. Fear not, I am going to walk you through on how you can become a micro-influencer in your chosen niche market and get noticed by brands.
Step 1 – Be an Expert
You have to show the brands that you are highly knowledgeable about your industry. Establishing your industry is pretty simple, find a niche market and focus on it. It could be something that you are obsessed about or something that interests you such as; cars, video games, make-up, fashion, art, etc. Before you go out to buy a car you want to get an opinion from an expert in automobiles about which is the best company, model, specifications in a car. Similarly, before brands team up with you they want to know that you are passionate or have significant knowledge in the products that they sell.
The next step goes hand-in-hand with being an expert.
Step 2 – Share your Secrets
Once you have determined your niche market, start talking about it as if it’s your baby. Let’s simply pick an industry like make-up to further explain. Use as many platforms on social media as you like to share what you love – in this case we assume it is make-up. Start off with creating a simple Blog using websites such as Tumblr, Blogger or WordPress that are popular and fairly easy to use. Blogging gives you a chance to voice your opinion about products or services and your opinion doesn’t always have to be a good one, people like to hear honest reviews about brands. You can talk about the different make-up products you have tried, brands you love or dislike, beauty hacks and also about the latest products on the market.
Instagram is another great social media outlet where you can showcase your skills such as your make-up looks, products that have helped your skin and your latest make-up purchases. Make sure to be very active on your chosen platforms on social media and don’t forget to tag the brands because the more active you are and the more you tag brands the more they will notice you.
Step 3 – Start making Friends
When you create a routine of posting once or twice daily on Instagram and publishing one to two blog posts a week, you will notice that your following is increasing. It might take some time in the beginning but if the content is interesting then surely people will come back for more. This will lead to people liking and sharing your posts which is great for getting exposure in front of big brands. Your next step should be to create a community of like-minded influencers around you. Start searching for influencers in your industry and befriend them by engaging with them on social media. If they have a blog then start writing valuable comments, if you follow them on Instagram, double tap their photos and leave a comment underneath. After a few comments and likes, they will start to notice you and may even follow back. Eventually this can lead to a genuine online friendship. Having a group of like-minded influencers will get you attention when you least expect it. For instance; another influencer might ask you to collaborate with them which could get you exposure in front of a brand that would not have otherwise heard of you.
Also try to connect with other influencers in person by attending conferences and public speaking events. This is a great way to put a face to a name that you have been hearing or seeing on social media. You get to interact with them on a more personal and intimate level, share your experiences, learn some tips and get some advice about how to become successful in your industry.
Step 4 – Create a Great Brand Image
Your Instagram account and blog are your portfolio. Make it look outstanding and appealing, just like you would make a house look beautiful to its potential buyer. Big brands are your customers, if you have a great bio and photographs then brands will start noticing you. Make sure your profile picture is crisp and clean, not too busy, neutral background and shows your niche product clearly. As a make-up expert you should have a great photo with a full face of make-up on. Majority of the pictures on your Instagram feed should have makeup products or faces with make-up on since that is your niche market.
When it comes to your bio, make sure to clearly state where you are located since that makes it easier for brands to connect with you. Also, don’t forget to have a contact such as an email address where you can be easily reached. When a brand is interested in collaborating with you, they want to be able to get in touch with you quickly and usually through email.
Step 5 – Be the First to say Hi!
If you think that being a micro-influencer means you have to wait until a brand contacts you for a collaboration, then you are in for some disappointment. You don’t need to wait around, reach out to brands that you want to work with by directly contacting them. Best way to reach them would be through Twitter, or if you can find an email address for a person working in their marketing department then that’s great too. Reach out to them and ask questions, ask them if they are looking for influencers to team up with, and before they ask you (why they should hire you?), show them what you have to offer.
Create a package which contains information about you such as;
- Name, age, contact information
- Your expertise (makeup, art, cars, fashion)
- Social Media outlets (Blog URL, Instagram handle, etc.)
- Number of subscribers, followers
- Impressions, Reach, Engagement (found on Instagram or by downloading Google Analytics)
This package will not only show the company how serious you are about working with them, but it will also show them your professionalism and passion about what you do.
Becoming an influencer takes a lot of time and hard work. You may have to send packages like these to several brands before you hear back from any, but keep at it and be consistent in your efforts. Remember to always be genuine and be yourself, it may seem like hard work in the beginning but eventually it will pay off and you will start reaping the benefits without having to do too much work.
