Let’s start by comparing amount of engagement to total number of followers. Some sites recommend using impressions to calculate ER. Impressions as a metric, however, simply aren’t concrete enough to accurately determine ER.
By comparing engagement activity (post likes, comments) to the total number of followers, you can do the following:

This is useful for determining the success of any one photo, caption or group of hashtags. Over time, this can help you understand what your followers like to see most.
Calculate a user’s total average engagement rate
This is useful for getting a snapshot of your page’s overall engagement rate. It can also help you compare your Instagram’s engagement rate to that of a competitor.
How to Calculate Engagement Rate on Instagram
Our engagement rate calculator is a simple equation that anyone can use. Use this formula to determine the engagement rate of an Instagram post:
Let’s look at an example of how to use this Instagram engagement calculator. Here’s the scenario:
- You’re an Instagram user with 1,200 followers
- Your most recent post received 50 likes and 5 comments.
Now, here’s what to do:
- Add the number of likes and comments together to get the total number of engagements for that post. (50 likes+5 comments=55)
- Divide the total number of engagements on that post by your total number of followers (55 ÷1,200= 0.045)
- Multiply the final number by 100 to get a percentage (0.045 x 100 = 4.58%)

Let’s say you want to calculate your (or your competitor’s) engagement rate as a whole. The best way to do this is to analyze the last 30 days worth of posts.
This will give you the average engagement rate of any Instagram user. Here’s how to do it:
1. Make note of all the posts you (or a competitor) have uploaded to Instagram in the last 30 days
If you’re comparing one IG account to another, it’s ok if the number of posts varies. It’s important to compare “apples-to-apples.” This is why we use 30 days as a constant.
2. Add up all of the comments and likes on all posts within that 30-day period.
3. Take this number, and divide that by the total number of IG posts created within that 30 days.
The resulting number will be the average engagement rate per Instagram post.
4. Divide this by the number of followers that IG user has.
The resulting number will equal the average engagement rate of that Instagram user as a whole.
Here’s an example of this Instagram engagement calculator in action:
- You’re an Instagram user with 1,200 followers
- In the past 30 days, you posted to Instagram 15 times
- Add up all the likes and comments for all 15 posts in the last 30 days. (Let’s say this number added up to 750)
- Divide 750 by 15 (total # of posts in 30 days) — This number equals 50
- 50 is the average number of engagements per post
- Divide 50 by the number of followers you have (50÷1,200=0.041)
- Multiply that number by 100 to get a percentage (0.041 x 100= 4.1%)
What is a Good Engagement Rate on Instagram?
