Recent changes to the Instagram algorithm have made engagement rate more important than ever. Simply having a ton of followers is no longer an effective strategy for success.

That’s why so many users have turned to Instagram engagement calculators for help. However, the question that everyone has been asking us is,

What exactly is engagement rate, and why is it important?

This article is designed to be a simple guide for understanding what engagement rate is and how to calculate it. Plus, find out how to tell if your engagement rate on Instagram is good, or bad.

What is Engagement Rate on Instagram?

Engagement rate (ER) is determined by calculating how many of your total followers are actively engaging with your posts on a daily basis.

There are multiple different ways to measure Instagram engagement depending on your goals. A lot of sites offer built-in calculators that do the work for you. The biggest issue with them, however, is that they often don’t tell you which formula they are using.

My best advice is, don’t rely on inaccurate online calculators when it comes to your Instagram brand or business. It’s simply too important of a metric to leave to trust.

Later on in this article, I’ll talk about an easy formula anyone can use to correctly calculate their Instagram engagement rate.

To start, let’s talk about the best Instagram engagement calculator. Which data is best for measuring success, and why?

Engagement vs. followers

Let’s start by comparing amount of engagement to total number of followers. Some sites recommend using impressions to calculate ER. Impressions as a metric, however, simply aren’t concrete enough to accurately determine ER.

By comparing engagement activity (post likes, comments) to the total number of followers, you can do the following:

Calculate Instagram engagement rate on any individual post

This is useful for determining the success of any one photo, caption or group of hashtags. Over time, this can help you understand what your followers like to see most.

Calculate a user’s total average engagement rate

This is useful for getting a snapshot of your page’s overall engagement rate. It can also help you compare your Instagram’s engagement rate to that of a competitor.

How to Calculate Engagement Rate on Instagram

Our engagement rate calculator is a simple equation that anyone can use. Use this formula to determine the engagement rate of an Instagram post:

Let’s look at an example of how to use this Instagram engagement calculator. Here’s the scenario:

  • You’re an Instagram user with 1,200 followers
  • Your most recent post received 50 likes and 5 comments.

Now, here’s what to do:

  1. Add the number of likes and comments together to get the total number of engagements for that post. (50 likes+5 comments=55)
  2. Divide the total number of engagements on that post by your total number of followers (55 ÷1,200= 0.045)
  3. Multiply the final number by 100 to get a percentage (0.045 x 100 = 4.58%)

Your Instagram engagement rate for this post is 4.58%

Let’s say you want to calculate your (or your competitor’s) engagement rate as a whole. The best way to do this is to analyze the last 30 days worth of posts.

This will give you the average engagement rate of any Instagram user. Here’s how to do it:

1. Make note of all the posts you (or a competitor) have uploaded to Instagram in the last 30 days

If you’re comparing one IG account to another, it’s ok if the number of posts varies. It’s important to compare “apples-to-apples.” This is why we use 30 days as a constant.

2. Add up all of the comments and likes on all posts within that 30-day period.

3. Take this number, and divide that by the total number of IG posts created within that 30 days.

The resulting number will be the average engagement rate per Instagram post.

4. Divide this by the number of followers that IG user has.

The resulting number will equal the average engagement rate of that Instagram user as a whole.

Here’s an example of this Instagram engagement calculator in action:

  • You’re an Instagram user with 1,200 followers
  • In the past 30 days, you posted to Instagram 15 times
  1. Add up all the likes and comments for all 15 posts in the last 30 days. (Let’s say this number added up to 750)
  2. Divide 750 by 15 (total # of posts in 30 days) — This number equals 50
  3. 50 is the average number of engagements per post
  4. Divide 50 by the number of followers you have (50÷1,200=0.041)
  5. Multiply that number by 100 to get a percentage (0.041 x 100= 4.1%)

Your average Instagram engagement rate as a user is 4.1%

What is a Good Engagement Rate on Instagram?

Most people would think that a 4% engagement rate is very bad. In reality, however, an engagement rate on Instagram of 4% is actually above average. In fact,

The average Instagram engagement rate is 3%.

Keep in mind, the more followers you have, the more likely you are to have a lower engagement rate. This is especially true if you have purchased followers.

If you’ve ever used a service like Instagress, or any service that offers a ton of followers quickly, chances are you have paid for fake or irrelevant followers. These types of followers will actually hurt your Instagram account. Furthermore, they contribute literally nothing to your engagement rate.

Why is Engagement Rate on Instagram Important?

Earlier in this article, I mentioned recent changes to the Instagram algorithm

The new algorithm inherently changed the appearance of Instagram feeds. Last year, when any user scrolled through their Instagram feed, they saw posts in chronological order.

This is no longer the case. In 2019, Instagram decides which posts to show users based on engagement. Logically, this makes perfect sense.

In general, if a post has a high engagement rate, it means the content is good. Instagram prioritizes showing its users great content to ensure they stay on the app longer.

Moreover, the higher your engagement rate on Instagram, the more likely your posts are to be featured in the “Top Posts” or “Discovery” sections.
